Requesting Web Space for a Student or Organization

Requests for web space are made online via the Student Web site. You must have an eRaider account to apply for and use student server web space.

Connecting to your website with FrontPage

After opening FrontPage, from the File menu choose "Open site". A dialogue box will appear requesting the URL (web address) of your site. (See Location of Your Website for more information concerning the URL.) Once you have entered the site URL, (including "http://") click "Open". Another dialogue box will appear requesting your eraider username and password. You must enter your credentials in the following manner:

  • User name: ttuhsc\eraider username
  • Password: eraider password

Note: If you have worked on this site already, FrontPage will assume the previous URL that you entered is the one you wish to open, and will have it filled out in the dialogue box.

Publishing Your Website

FrontPage allows you to work "on the fly" - meaning that you connect directly to the server through FrontPage while you are making your changes. Any changes you make will be automatically saved to the online version upon saving your work or closing FrontPage. An alternative to this is to create your page on your local computer, then upload your finished page to the server.

Saving Your Webpage While Working "On The Fly"

Once you connect to the server to work on your webpage, you’ll notice that there is no “Save” option under File in the Menu Bar. Nor is there a little “Save diskette” in the button bar. They are both “grayed out” – indicating that you can’t use them. One of the neat things in FrontPage 2003 is that it automatically saves your web site as you make each change. To prove this, click on "File" in the Menu Bar and then click "Exit." FrontPage 2003 will close. Now open FrontPage as you did previously. When FrontPage opens, your web site appears – just like you left it. Keep in mind, all content becomes visible to the public immediately upon saving or closing FrontPage.

Location of Your Website

Once your request has been processed, you will be given a URL (HTTP location) for your web site space. Typically it will follow this naming scheme:

For the Personal Web Page URL, replace USERNAME with the username supplied when you obtained the account. Typically your username is the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name. Example: John Smith's would be "http://student.ttuhsc.edu/JSmith". Use this URL to view your web page in a browser. If you forget or lose your URL, you can get to it by browsing to http://student.ttuhsc.edu/ and clicking on your name (or organization's name) from the "Student Web Sites" list.

Naming Your Homepage

A homepage is the entry page to your website. It is the starting point where the other pages are linked.

IMPORTANT! Your homepage must be named "default.htm"

If your site won't display after you publish it, check to ensure your homepage is named correctly. You will need to replace any temporary file that was created with the same name when your request for the webspace was processed. Homepage names other than "default.htm" are not permitted and will prevent your site from displaying on the web.

What is a "URL"?

URL is an abbreviation for "Uniform Resource Locator." It is the website address that you type in to access a website. For example, http://www.ttuhsc.edu is the URL for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. When you apply for web space with TTUHSC, you will be given a URL with which you and others can access your website. See "Location of Your Website" for clarification on how this pertains to your site.

Obtaining FrontPage

The method for connecting to your website is Microsoft FrontPage. If you do not have the newest version of FrontPage, TTUHSC has a campus agreement with Microsoft for free downloads of Office products. If you need FrontPage you may download it here:

You will need your eraider to log on to download this software.

eRaider Accounts

You will need an eRaider account to request and publish your webpages on the student server, to download software (such as FrontPage), and to sign up for any technology shorcourses or CBT's. If you do not have an eRaider Account or you need help with your account go to http://eRaider.ttu.edu or contact the Information Technology Help Desk at 806-743-2875 or HelpDesk@ttuhsc.edu.

FrontPage Instruction

Technology Support at TTU offers free shortcourses in both HTML and Microsoft FrontPage. All students, faculty, and staff who would like to have a personal web page but don't know how to create a page are encouraged to sign up for these classes. Those interested can go to TTU's Technology Support Shortcourse website for more information. Alternatively, CBT courses (computer based training at your own pace) is also available. A valid eraider is required for registration of both the shortcourses and CBT's.

Technical Support
