Moving to the Metroplex

Where do most students live?

  • SMU area (University Park, Highland Park)

  • Northwest Highway & TX-75

  • Arlington (Between TX-183 and I-30)

  • Irving (Las Colinas off TX-114)

  • Dallas Medical District (I-35)/Inwood/Lemmon

The Oak Cliff (area directly surrounding Dallas VAMC) is NOT recommended.

Some students elect to live Plano, Richardson, Frisco, McKinney, Ft Worth, Lewisville, Keller, Mansfield, Hurst, Euless, and other areas outside of Dallas proper.

What's traffic in the Metroplex like?

Expect traffic in the Dallas/Ft Worth area is dramatically more congested than Amarillo and Lubbock, resulting in longer transit times.

If you choose to live in areas that are not geographically close to the SOP campuses, keep in mind that driving delays (outside of major traffic accidents) are NOT acceptable excuses for tardiness to classes and rotation.

A good rule of thumb is to leave 20 minutes earlier that what you think you should.

You will have to fight traffic.  It’s like death and taxes.

What should I look at when picking an area?

  • Find an area that you feel comfortable in

  • Look at the distance to the 2 campuses and rotation sites

    • P3s: Didactic lecture/discussion are located at the SOUTHWESTERN campus. Case studies are held at BOTH campuses (alternate b/w each semester)

    • P4s: Rotations may be scheduled at sites across the D/FW Metroplex

Do not hesitate to contact a P3 or P4 that you know that is or was deployed to the Dallas/Ft Worth campus.  We were in your shoes once and would be happy to answer your questions.
